Today is Day Four of my special "Does it Work" Health tests, and perhaps, today features the most controversial test of them all.  I'm focusing on nutritional cleansing weight loss plans   These days, it seems almost any magazine you open or red carpet interview you watch on TV, celebrities are talking about detoxing to jump-start their weight loss.

No one is asking about science based research. Dani is correct in everything she has said and my only critique would be to further back her current research by utilizing and citing additional sources backed by evidence based research. The critics on this site offer no back up of their opinions with anything more than what they have obviously bought into after some type of indoctrination into this program. As a RN and public health professional there is simply no research that supports this type of program as being ” good” for you. Any extreme reduction in calories, fasting, and eliminating real food will get you results if yyou’re looking to lose weight, however, over the long term because of the lack if research we really don’t know what type if long term effects this type of regimen may have on the body. The key here is to fully research not just the program but the ingredients and the claims any type of program makes. If you know a medical professional that you trust utilize their professional opinions. Lastly the mist credible information will be found in peer reviewed journals and publications. Be fully informed!!!!!!! One last thing…when you say that the protein is Ftom “grass fed cows grazing in the pristine lands in New Zealand” exactly HOW do you know this? Seriously. How in the world could you even verify this? HOW is that protein turned into the protein you consume in your shake? I’m sure that the process is not as “pristine” as you might think.
While frighteningly difficult to pronounce, this digestion-resistant carbohydrate source is quite natural and good for you. Oligosaccharides, in fact, are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. Wow. Just wow. Dani, first of all – my hat is off to you for sticking to your guns. Secondly – I totally agree – eating healthy organic locally sourced food is your best bet for health – that and unlearning some serious misinformation about fat, cholesterol and sugar. Finally, it is an unfortunate reality that many things in life are corrupted by the profit motive – at times to such an extent that decent people are caught up in the craze to just make a quick buck or two. It is also unfortunate that so many people are caught in the trap of ignorance, poverty or both – it is not cheap to feed a family on really healthy food, especially meat, produce. I’ve researched these topics and also the history behind American industrialized agriculture (e.g. Food, Inc., King Corn, etc) and am appalled at the corruption and overall insanity that has engulfed this nation. You can go just about anywhere else in the world and get healthy food quite easily – a expat friend of mine lives in Uruguay and is very happy with the situation there. So, hang in there and keep up the good work on your blog and getting the truth out. Do you know of Chris Kresser and his work?
I couldn’t find a critique of Isagenix on the Web, but that’s not surprising. No serious medical scientist would take it seriously enough to bother about it. And it’s basically all been done before; it’s just a slightly new wrinkle on an old scam. I have to question anyone’s credibility who makes an ignorant statement that wholefoods is causing obesity. Clearly, these individuals are misinformed. ANY food in excess may lead to obesity. However, health is not just about weight. There are many variables which determine good health. If one where to eat 8 cups of brown rice a day 8 bananas and 14 avocados a day, YES this could lead to weight gain. It is still important that when eating whole or raw foods that we are eating a balanced diet. Even eating too much of the same greens may have an adverse affect on the body.
So should we also only take medicine that is natural from the earth as well? Should we leave it up to our bodies to cure itself without the aid of doctors? I am not understanding this post at all. Science with foods and nutrition is awesome. Our foods are tainted with all kinds of pesticides and poisons. Their are pollutants in the air that your breathing in daily. So you need products to help you get rid of the toxins in your body. The other option would be to just stop breathing as this post would suggest. This is just another nonsense post without any real facts to back it up. It’s all opinion and to my knowledge, people these days are too opinionated. The greatest number of comments were testimonials: “I took it and I lost weight.” They claimed not just weight loss, but a variety of improvements. It allegedly cured fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and hemorrhoids. It facilitated getting off sleeping pills and caffeine, balanced brain chemistry (what does that mean?), improved focus and mental clarity, allowed running longer marathons with less fatigue, saved a failing marriage, stopped irritability and crankiness, kept arm from getting sore after pitching, “Made my son interact appropriately with peers, take care of himself, and want to be hugged and kissed,” and “I made money selling it.” One said, “My out of control Irritable Bowel Syndrome disappeared and I had the healthiest BM in about 6 years! … you can’t brainwash POO!!” Two commented that the Isagenix program provides motivation; one said he needs “structer” (structure?) to stay on a diet.

Bobby, have to respond yes but you are not doing anything special its just whey with some vitamins. So along with the rest best bet is to do to a nutritionist that will give you a better life style other than taking shakes every day…. really anyone will lose weight if you reduced the calories that you are taking in and increase your physical activity. Keep the extra money that you would be putting into other peoples pockets giving them the ability to buy those cars and trips and do something for you family……and yourself


A meal replacement shake is possibly better than fast food (although you can make better choices depending on the restaurant), but is certainly worse than normal, reasonably healthy food. Drinking stupid shakes filled with sugar and other crap just isn’t good for you. It’s easy, but it’s certainly not healthy. Not even when these companies lie and tell you IT’S ALL NATURAL!!!

Oh Boy, I am reading all this information about how ISAGENIX product is bad for you because of some ingredients and is wondering why is isagenix helping me. I am a cancel survivor and had developed allergies, joint pain, was tired and wipeout out. I am not an obese person and always eat healthy but yet have these problems. I used natural product to help my allergies and joint pain and it never work. Since I am using Isagenix, my allgeriies and joint pain are ALL GONE!!!. I am actually enjoying being outside again. I have so much energy and I feel my life is back. Fact is ISAGENIX WORKS FOR ME.

Isagenix is SOY FREE, and GLUTEN FREE. I just think if you are going to give people advice on health and wellness then you should do your true due diligence in your research. If you did get this information straight from isagenix.com i would like to know where? I just searched their website and could find nothing that said they use soy or gluten. I just wanted to thank you for your review of Isagenix. I have been doing some research because some close friends have been pushing this product on me. Isagenix was introduced to me by my sister who is a MLM fan and specialist. I am the antithesis of her when it comes to this but she’s my sister and I love her. She lost all her weight on Herbal-life and was a fan of that for many years. Now “Isa” is all I hear about. Suffice to say, Isagenix appeals to potential distributors for many different reasons – none of which need to be discussed here. The point is, MLM companies wouldn’t exist without distributors who are willing to follow the MLM doctrine. Half the mice were allowed to nibble throughout the night and day on a healthy, controlled diet, while the others only had access to food for eight hours, but could eat whatever they wanted. The result of the 16-hour food ban? The fasting mice stayed lean, while the mice who noshed ‘round the clock became obese—even though both groups consumed the same amount of calories! There are more aggressive fasting protocols, but 12 hours without food is enough for most people to enter into a fasted state, according to some experts.
I just have to say since I can not post the pictures I took of the IsaLean Shake container the issue can not put to rest. There are no DENATURED protein in Isagenix IsaLean Shake and is FREE of GLUTEN and SOY (reads on the front of the container). Regardless of the drink or recipe you use, just be sure to stick to unprocessed ingredients. The best detox for weight loss will always require nothing more than what’s found abundantly in nature. The same holds true if you decide to use a detox supplement like Digestive Refresh. Thank you for this article! I have been a very successful network marketer with both Beachbody and Visalus…I did help A LOT of people lose weight and “get healthy…-er” than they were. But through my OWN research and dissecting each ingredient in the products I consume as I became more interested in researching all of the supposed healthy ingredients, I have found that google does a body good! If you copy and paste the ingredients into google and ask “IS ______(insert ingredient)___ non-gmo/organic?” you will get ALL sorts of reliable info. I have YET to find an MLM that produces a truly NON-GMO and Certified Organic product. Now, some claim they do…but their ingredients say otherwise. And let’s be real…every website is going to vouch for their product. What kind of company would they be if they outed themselves? Think about it!
Commending you on writing frankly about a product which has “sacred cow” status with so many who want any way to be healthy that allows them to avoid work and learning about real food. I have a friend who uses this (she hates to cook and wants to know nothing about the subject). I had to go through several google search screens to find an article that wasn’t either directly selling or touting the sale of the product. First off people should know better by now to run as fast as they possibly can when they see any multi level marketing companies. They feed off the weak minded and its a somehow legal ponzi scheme based model. Second, Just because these products might help someone lose weight here and there doesn’t mean they are healthy. The nutrition industry is not regulated and we all know how corrupt the FDA is…. So to all these people who take these products, Body by Vi, Isagenix, etc just admit it that you bought into some sleezy sales pitch and sure the product might have worked a little bit but in reality you have no idea what you’re putting into your body.
Isagenix is food, many commenters insisted. Regular food is from depleted soils. Organic food made children behave better at lunch in a school study. Genetically modified food is lacking in nutrition. “The majority of people fill their stomachs with foods void of natural nutrition and the evidence supports that they behave poorly, learn less, misbehave more and commit more crimes than those who fill their stomachs with highly nutritious organic produce and meats.” [Wow! Instead of the Twinkie defense, criminals can claim their non-organic lunch made them do it!]

At CHOICE we were contacted by many people with concerns about health advice being provided by Isagenix sellers on social media. Sophia from Sydney says she saw women who were pregnant or breastfeeding who complained of feeling hungry who were being encouraged to persevere with the low-calorie diet by self-proclaimed "wellness experts" on Facebook who were also profiting from sales of the product (see Sophia's story) while others said they were told the program would help with conditions as diverse as asthma, anxiety and insomnia.

Thanks for reaching out. There are different stages of the Cellular Healing Diet; the advanced stage is basically the ketogenic diet, wherein may lie the confusion. The basic CHD may include small amounts of sprouted ancient grains, whereas the advanced CHD (the keto diet) includes no grains, but much more good fat and moderate protein.
