Pseudoscientific claims peppered many comments, such as this one: “Most people only absorb 8% to 12% of what we eat-the rest is waste which we flush down the toilet. With Isagenix we can absorb up to 94% of what is ingested with less waste going down the toilet. Isagenix is full of good probiotics which help rebuild our digestive systems, fights candida. Isagenix also helps the body become alkaline, which is a healthy body. John Hopkins 2008 Cancer Report stated that cancer cannot live in an alkaline body only acidic bodies. Processed food makes our bodies acidic-thus the epedemic [sic] of cancer and diabites [sic] in the USA along with heart disease.” [This is all nonsense.]
Don't forget healthy fats. Though you may be tempted to avoid anything labeled "fat" when trying to lose weight, fat is actually an essential part of our diet — they are good for your mental health and mood; reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer; reduce fatigue; and help keep you mentally sharp. Fats should be consumed in moderation, and certain types of fat should be avoided. Focus on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (like those found in avocados, nuts, olives, fatty fish, soy, and tofu) and avoid trans fat (found in commercially baked goods like cookies, pastries, cakes, muffins, and hamburger buns; packaged snack foods like crackers, microwave popcorn, candy, and chips; fried foods; pre-mixed products like cake mix, pancake mix, or chocolate milk; and anything with partially hydrogenated oil).
The bottom line is that “meal replacement shakes” from any company are not good for you and should not be used. We are meant to eat food, not drink shakes full of crap in place of food. Shills will tell you that these are a great option when you’re pressed for time, but grabbing some fresh fruit or vegetables is equally as easy (probably even easier) and much better for you.

You never hear of anyone "living" a cleansing lifestyle, yet we all know intuitively that we need to eat healthier. That's what makes juicing so attractive - it's considered a quick fix. We've all been there; sick and tired of being sick and tired and know we need to change our situation, so we try to do the right thing and jump into a juice cleanse because every good diet starts with a cleanse - right?
I have read all of the essays put out by Isagenix because someone close to me is involved with the company. I have written to its higher-level employees with questions and received replies. I have watched their videos, listened to their podcasts. My conclusion is that the folks who control this company are dishonest and so are their stated scientists. I do not believe that their products, if consumed on a short-term basis for the purpose of either losing weight or kick-starting one’s diet to a more disciplined daily regimen, place the consumer at any real risk. And I’m not sure if the Isagenix products place anyone at risk who eats a meal per day of real (actual) food. What is pathetic and sad about this company is the the untested claims it makes to sell its product. When I say “untested,” I mean not tested by an independent third party. Isagenix, and only Isagenix, says it tests its products (“really we do, I swear,” to quote a recent podcast narrated by an Isagenix “pro”). The company operates within the law — just.
Dinner? That's miso soup with some chopped sea vegetables (like the Japanese nori, used to make sushi) snipped over top. Or you might choose a cup of brown rice with a few chopped vegetables mixed in. "Brown rice gives your body plenty of B vitamins, which is a stress reducer. It's very high fiber, will fill you up, will help you sleep, and will flush you out in the morning."
Dani, you mention fructose in high amounts can be toxic to the liver. Can you elaborate on that? There is no definition or explanation as to what is a high amount. While I agree that eating items with high fructose is bad, this is a result of poor diet where items with fructose have little to no fiber or protein content. That would allow the body (liver) to break down the “sugar” and process it similar to glucose. I’m not expert, just an interested reader.
In looking back at this whole kerfuffle, it became clear to me that there had been a colossal barrier to communication. The person who had originally asked me about Isagenix, the blog owner, and I were all operating in the arena of science and evidence. Most of the commenters were operating in a whole different universe of discourse based on belief, hope, hearsay, and personal experience. It’s not me who doesn’t represent “our profession” well. We do two very different things. There is something to be said about understand each individual’s needs in combination with the environment. True, the soil is depleted, pesticides, and pollutants have effected and affected the growth of whole foods to a point where it just isn’t realistic to get what we needs anymore. In cases like myself, people are starting to become allergic to things that they once were not. In my case onions, radishes, and green peppers for goodness sake. I can not eat them raw. I tried organic grown in the best of conditions and still I have to have them cooked.
So I signed up for the 30 day cleanse and lasted 3 days…my stomach couldn’t take the shakes and other supplements. I have since sent back my stuff and am waiting for a refund. Meanwhile I am feeling disappointed in my PT who recommended this stuff. 11g of sugar per shake? Sunflower oil? Time to find a new PT! Thanks for this article…wish I had seen it a month ago! 🙂
1. Cut out sugar and artificial sweeteners for a week. The goal is to reset your “sweet” taste buds. By limiting very sweet flavors your taste buds will “reset” themselves as they lower their perception of sweetness. Steer away from sugary drinks, snacks, and treats. Allow fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth—and you’ll be amazed by how well it works! When you go back to sugary foods, you’ll need less sweet flavor to satisfy you. Although as someone who has studied a great deal of chemistry and engineering I find the “Whole foods/Organic foods” movement to be completely absurd. Being anti GMO is even more ridiculous as we’ve been modifying organisms for as long as we’ve been farming ~10,000 years, and horizontal gene transfer has been occurring for a long time more than that! We can just do it more accurately and safely now.
You’ve obviously never tried it. You can spout off all the random information you want, but Isagenix makes me FEEL better than anything I’ve ever eaten. Something unhealthy could never make me feel this good. I’ve eaten whole, unprocessed, healthy foods my whole life, but my health completely turned around when I started adding Isagenix into the mix. Haters gonna hate, but you will NEVER, EVER convince me that Isagenix is unhealthy. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Cheers!
Fructose from organic sugar beet is used in the shakes. Fructose is much better to be using than artificial sweetners and flavourings which you won’t find in isagenix products at all. Fructose is also low glycemic (32) and increases blood sugar control so is a better choice for diabetics. You won’t find high fructose corn syrup in any of the products. I have to say that I’m pretty amazed that people are still falling for the ‘cleanse’ thing. Maybe it’s just me, but haven’t we learned by now that cleanses are useless? What is the point of doing this 30 day diet/cleanse, anyhow? Losing weight that’s mostly water and will come right back when you start eating normally? ‘Resetting your metabolism’, which really doesn’t work that way and in fact, may reset the wrong way, slowing down from lack of nourishment? Is it the handfuls of supplements that you couldn’t possibly take – or afford, for that matter – for the rest of your life, but are also unproven and likely do nothing? Or, the replacement of meals with a shake – reminiscent of Slim Fast, and we all know how that works – but not learning how to really prepare, savor, portion, and enjoy food? I know that you know all of what I’m saying here, so please don’t let emotion overtake intellect when you’re considering Isagenix or any other diet program.
Is that the conversation where you’re perpetually defending yourself to the critics who are attacking you personally and professionally? Or where you’re basking in the praise of those who agree with you? You’re right, I wasn’t trying to contribute to either of those conversations; I was simply pointing out that had you worded things differently, you could have saved yourself a lot of grief since that’s where it seems a lot of the criticism stems from. It’s called constructive criticism.

I have a similar opinion to Mickhael. You need to be more considered with your use of buzz words like toxic. Moderation is absolutely the key. If you drink too much water it is toxic. Yes maltodextrin is a food additive, one that serves a useful purpose as a thickener in some processed foods. I agree that processed foods should be limited, cooking with unprocessed ingredients is definitely the way to go. But I still eat processed foods in moderation because I enjoy them, and they serve a useful purpose on many occasions. I think you need to improve your understanding of a few nutrition topics (there are many that I need to improve my understanding of also, nutrition is a relatively new science).
